Mischa Maisky - The Romantic Cello

Latvian superstar cellist, pupil of both the great Russian cello masters Piagorsky and Rostropovich and himself at home on concert platforms throughout the world, Mischa Maisky says of himself: „I play an Italian cello, with French bows, Austrian and German strings; my daughter was born in Paris, my older son in Brussels and my younger one in Italy; I drive a Japanese car, wear a Swiss watch and an Indian necklace; and I feel at home everywhere that people appreciate and enjoy classical music.“

No less memorable than his deeply felt and expressive cello playing are his uncoventional concert at tire and eventful career. Maisky has collaborated with virtually all of the great conductors of his time: Leonard Bernstein, Carlo Maria Giulini, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel and James Levine. His illustrious chamber-music partners include Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet and many others.

A special highlight of his concert activities came in the year 2000, when, to mark the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death, Maisky performed Johann Sebastian Bach’s solo Suites in an ongoing marathon of more than 100 concerts all over the world. At Abu Dhabi Classics he will be joined by the Russian pianist Pavel Gililov in the Emirates Palace. Their programme will include Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata, which contains some of the most beautiful melodies ever written.
